Mould growth as an element of indoor air pollution

One of the elements of the indoor air pollution is considered to be microbial pollution. This is caused by growth of various amounts of different bacteria and fungi species. In particular, mould can be distinguished as the most frequent one. It can easily grow indoors when sufficient moisture exists. Which in its turn may cause different health problems for the building occupants namely respiratory problems, allergies and asthma, as well as can lower immune system resistance against diseases.

Thus it is of vital importance to identify the presence of mould and implement control measures to eliminate it and prevent future occurrence.

The main cause of mould growth is considered dampness problems in the building. Climate change, floods, rise of the sea level also will contribute to the moisture problems and increase the number of buildings with dampness. Additionally, adequate heating prevented by high energy costs will also add its share in the increase of condensation and indoor dampness. Dampness together with mould growth can also occur in school buildings, offices, day-care centers, etc. Dampness in the building is also a sign of poor air ventilation system of the building such as high air humidity, water leaks, and condensation. And it can lead to an increase in the number of other potentially hazardous and harmful indoor pollutants.
